Before you hitch up your trailer or caravan, run through this essential safety checklist to ensure a smooth journey.
Pre-Departure Checks
Towing adds significant weight and length to your vehicle, changing how it handles. Before you head out, always check:
- The Hitch: Ensure the coupling is securely locked onto the tow ball and the safety pin is inserted.
- Safety Chains: Cross the chains under the coupling to catch the drawbar if it disconnects.
- Lights: Check indicators, brake lights, and running lights on the trailer.
- Tire Pressure: Trailer tires often need higher pressure than car tires. Check the sidewall for max PSI.
On The Road
Remember to increase your following distance. It takes much longer to stop when towing. Avoid sudden lane changes and use your mirrors frequently.
